new media & experimental art days

may 24 - june 23, 2024

bschlabs. tirol

The Open Call 24 has closed

The Tyrolean Bschlabertal lies at 1400m and is one of the most remote places in Austria. Today, fewer than 100 people live there, and ageing and rural exodus are eating away at the region. For the third time, medienfrische is taking place here over 30 days. Artists from all over the world are invited to stay and work in Bschlabs. medienfrische is a contemporary art and media festival that focuses on current developments in the art world. The landscape conditions and the completely different way of organizing everyday life in the valley require new and unconventional ways of thinking and ideas as well as a questioning of conventional working methods.

we offer

The residence in a secluded high valley encourages people to linger, rethink and experiment. The Bschlabertal serves as a laboratory and workshop. Accommodation and meals for the duration of the stay are provided by us. Workspaces, exhibition venues and numerous open spaces are also provided. In addition, a varied program of concerts, lectures, film screenings, readings, land art projects and much more will take place throughout the four weeks of medienfrische.

we are looking for

Media artists as well as scientists, artists and students from all fields (digital media, architecture, music and sound, film, literature, visual and performing arts, land art, etc.) who want to experiment with the topic, the landscapes and the inhabitants of the high mountains. At the end of the residency, an artifact created on site will be presented for safekeeping in an art repository. Both individuals and groups of artists of all nationalities and genders over the age of 18 can apply. Individuals will be given preference in the selection process.

locations/workplaces

The Bschlabertal valley with its three villages of Bschlabs, Boden and Pfafflar is located in the Tyrolean district of Reutte in Austria. Alpine meadows, empty buildings, a fire station, a soccer pitch, a church, living quarters and hay barns are available for projects there. The work locations and accommodation are allocated in collaboration with the participants and may change during the course of the stay.

topic

EMPTY TIME
Our society attaches no value to empty time, i.e. time in which nothing meaningful seems to be done and in which we are not considered productive. We have to constantly function and self-optimize, while at the same time exposing ourselves to a limitless and ever faster flow of information. The farming families in the Bschlabertal valley have not known empty time in recent centuries. It was only with the onset of mechanization, mobility, gainful employment and the accompanying emigration in the second half of the last century that the valley became increasingly empty - as people left their homes, gave up traditional work and communication spaces and saved working hours that were once essential for survival. Art has always represented a border zone in life that invites chance, decay and emptiness. Exposure to empty time can become a source of inspiration. Becoming empty can mean: letting go, interrupting, objecting, dissolving, turning back. Empty time can be understood as a suspension of work in order to try out a different everyday life, or a suspension of everyday life in order to try out a different work. Can empty time open up a space of possibility to try out new forms of (care, art, etc.) activities and ways of relating? Can empty time do without a goal? Hasn't empty time always been full of fragments of our human history? How can empty time and empty space in the Bschlab Valley correspond with each other? And am I personally afraid of empty time?
